Artist Statement
TOWARDS THE SUBLIME
Painting in a digital world is a reinvention of traditional tools and techniques to reflect technological and physical dualities. My work represents a hybrid of art forms as it straddles these dualities. It acts as a simulacrum, manifested in my imagination, created in the abstractness of the virtual space to then exist in the physical world through the medium of painting on paper.
My process is initiated when handmade papers from the East are scanned into the digital realm. These specialty dyed papers are crafted by the hand of artisans in the real world based on traditional printing techniques. Their brilliant designs, patterns and motifs are steeped with symbolism and endless rich colour combinations. In digital space guided by my own hand, these papers are transformed to return to the physical world reinvented.
